The Château de Bazoches affords a double interest, as historic as tourist

12th century

The Château was built at that time, around 1180, just like the basilica of Vèzelay (located at 10 kilometres). Kings Philippe Auguste and Richard Lion Heart set off for the third crusade from this basilica and stopped in Bazoches before they reached the Holy Land.

The Maréchal of Vauban

He acquired Bazoches, in 1675, thanks to an important subsidy granted by Louis 14th, after the siege of Maestricht (Holland), which was captured in thirteen days only.
From 1680, Vauban transformed the Château into garrison. Until then, the western wing of the Château was opened on the valley, but Vauban opened its higher part. He also pierced a second gate so that coaches could move more easily in the inner courtyard. He enlarged the outbuildings, extending the stables (to receive about sixty horses) and created a footbath.

In 2007, Bazoches celebrates its 15th year of uninterrupted work; its 11th year of opening to the public and of course the 300th anniversary of the death of the Marshal de Vauban, its famous owner.

Classified among the highest places of tourism of Burgundy, the Château de Bazoches is this year a candidate site to the UNESCO World Heritage within the framework of the network of the major Vauban sites.

Tercentenary of died of Vauban
The Minister for Arts, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, announced by official statement on January 5 that the French government would present to UNESCO, in 2007, the candidature of the work of Vauban for inscription on the World Heritage, as cultural goods.
